Gordon Prill designed a Solar Hot water Heating System that involved installing 60 Chromasun Micro-Concentrator (MCT) panels on 1,500 feet of the roof of the Benson Memorial Center, a hub of student campus life.
- Conducted field investigations to determine existing conditions and calculated the domestic hot water load based on the number of showers and other hot water uses for nearby dorms.
- Reviewed solar water heating options and recommended the best system for the application.
- Calculated the square footage of solar panels required on the roof for each building.
- Design the water storage tanks and associated pumps, piping and control systems.
- The MCT is a next generation high-performance solar collector that uses the same technology as utility scale solar systems except that it’s low profile, lightweight and has no external moving parts.
- Using a 25x Fresnel reflector optic, the MCT generates temperatures up to 220°C (428°F). A wide variety of fluids can be heated including thermal oil, water, saturated steam, brines/salines, slurries and potables/beverages.
