SLAC Breaks Ground on the Cryoplant for LCLS II

Ground breaking for the the new cryoplant building was held on July 18th with John Galayda, project director of the LCLS-II, digging the first hole. The site will house the refrigeration system for the next generation of SLAC’s X-ray laser. It will contain compressors, pumps and liquid helium for 37 cryomodules located 30 feet below the surface. The cryomodules allow scientists to chill the accelerator to two degrees above absolute zero, similar to outer space. At these low temperatures, the accelerator becomes superconducting, boosting electrons to high energies and creating a nearly continuous X-ray laser beam up to a million pulses per second. Galayda said that “Today, we’re launching this facility, and in 50 years or so, it will have made history.” Gordon Prill is the General Contractor for the cryoplant building and infrastructure.
