  • SLAC Cryoplant – A Huge Effort is Paying Off

    08/2/2017

Our big concrete pour started in the wee hours of the morning with dozens of trucks lined up ready to unload 1,800 cubic yards of cement (about 200 truckloads).  Since then the steel has been erected and our team is now working on the building envelope.  The pads have also been completed for a new cooling water plant, electrical substation and a 9,500 sq. ft. tank yard for helium and nitrogen gases. We have a great group of subcontractors working with our Gordon Prill team dedicated to getting the job done right!

  • SLAC Breaks Ground on the Cryoplant for LCLS II (2)

    07/18/2016

Ground breaking for the the new cryoplant building was held on July 18th with John Galayda, project director of the LCLS-II, digging the first hole. The site will house the refrigeration system for the next generation of SLAC’s X-ray laser. It will contain compressors, pumps and liquid helium for 37 cryomodules located 30 feet below the surface. The cryomodules allow scientists to chill the accelerator to two degrees above absolute zero, similar to outer space. At these low temperatures, the accelerator becomes superconducting, boosting electrons to high energies and creating a nearly continuous X-ray laser beam up to a million pulses per second. Galayda said that “Today, we’re launching this facility, and in 50 years or so, it will have made history.” Gordon Prill is the General Contractor for the cryoplant building and infrastructure.

  • SLAC Selects Gordon Prill to Build Their New $25.3 Million Cryoplant Building

    06/7/2016

This very technical project, part of the Linac Coherent Light Source II (LCLS) program for advanced x-ray research, will house two liquid helium producing plants to cool the equipment that generates enormous amount of heat and energy. The infrastructure requires a massive amount of grading for a huge service yard for the helium tanks and associated utilities. Construction will not be completed until mid-2017. Congrats to our Project Management Team!
